Feeling desperate to get real clients quickly?
 
This little tool requires a very antiquated tool
a newspaper. 

Look for local companies that are buying display
advertisements in the paper. And start making
phone calls. 

If a client can afford to advertise in a
newspaper, they can probably afford to pay you.
Best times to make calls? Depends on the industry,
but usually its an hour before opening or in the
middle of the afternoon.

When you actually get on the phone with the guy
who wrote the ad, tell them youre a freelance
copywriter in the area and youre wondering how
the response was. 

Make sure you spend a little time learning the
basics of newspaper placement before you call 
you can even spend a few minutes researching the
papers policy on ads 

After all, sometimes the paper has a guy that
helps business owners who buy ad space. 

Tell them you have some ideas on how to improve
their responses over the next month, talk to them
(or set an appointment) and offer to write their
next ad for free.

Easy. Low risk.

Usually, the ads arent written by pros  and if
you followed the advice in my last email, youll
be able to spot the ones written by harried, tired
entrepreneurs.

Theyll appreciate help from a specialist. And
depending on which industry youre dialing up 

If you can get 3 or 4 extra responses thats an
extra $3,000 or $4,000 dollars in their pocket. 

Youve paid their rent, youve taken them on
vacation, youve bought them a week of fancy
dinners, all for nothing. 

You dont think youve locked them down as a
client and scored a stream of quality referrals?

This takes a couple hours. Tops.

No excuses.

If youre terrified of talking on the phone, you
can always send an email, either with plain text
or a screencast video.

But the phone is going to be your best chance to
get either an immediate response or the best time
to call back.
